The Beechcraft Staggerwing seats 5, including the pilot, which in this case happens to be proud owner Jess Shryack. It is called a Staggerwing because the wings are slightly staggered instead of lined up to each other perfectly. This is done so that when one wing stalls, the other keeps flying. The "staggerwing" configuration refers to the fact that the leading edges of the wings are not lined up on top of each other but staggered. It is very common among bi-planes. It is the upper wing that is usually "staggered" to a position further forward than the lower wing. This is referred to as a "positive stagger." However, In the case of the Beechcraft Staggerwing, it is the upper wing that is further aft of the lower wing. This is referred to as a "negative stagger". The monicker "staggerwing" was applied to the Beechcraft during an air race, when an excited announcer exclaimed "look at the negative staggerwing Beechcraft go," or something similar. Needless to say, the aircraft became popularly referred to thereafter as a "staggerwing" Beechcraft.
